This report examines the critical role of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in safeguarding food security across APEC economies against challenges like climate variability and supply chain disruptions. While emerging technologies — such as AI, IoT, drones, and blockchain — demonstrate immense potential to boost agricultural productivity, climate resilience, and market integration, MSMEs face significant adoption barriers. These include high costs, digital infrastructure gaps, and limited technical capacity.

 

Drawing insights from the 2026 Workshop in Piura, the publication highlights real-world applications from member economies like Indonesia; Malaysia; Peru; and Viet Nam. Ultimately, the project underscores that technological innovation alone is insufficient; scaling these solutions requires a robust enabling ecosystem driven by public-private collaboration, targeted financing, practical training, and regulatory framework integration to effectively de-risk and accelerate digital transformation for small-scale producers.
