This report provides an overview of the concept of assistive technology, with key demographic trends, in the Asia-Pacific and globally, on the increasing needs of people with disability and ageing populations to access assistive technology. Currently 2.5 billion people worldwide need one or more assistive products, and with aging population demographics, increasing to 3.5 billion people by 2050. The report outlines the economic impacts and benefits of assistive technology access for individuals, for growth in APEC economies, drawing on international developments. It outlines several existing policies and initiatives that address structural barriers identified by selected APEC economies that were highlighted at a policy dialogue workshop in August 2025. The report identifies emerging areas for structural reforms which can have significant demographic and economic benefits: leadership; economy-wide reforms; catalytic sectors; private sector; and trade, standards and market shaping. In conclusion it identifies potential future opportunities for further cross-fora APEC collaboration.
