This publication examines how 5G-enabled smart manufacturing can support enhanced interoperability between manufacturing systems and communication networks, and discusses its potential to contribute to improvements in supply chain efficiency, resilience, and sustainability. Drawing on seminar discussions and pre-event survey findings, the project highlights that 5G smart manufacturing has progressed from conceptual exploration to practical implementation. It also notes that APEC economies widely recognize digital transformation as a key driver of competitiveness, with shared priorities including 5G deployment, AI integration, and digital talent development.
In addition, the publication presents illustrative case examples—such as 5G non-public networks, AI-based visual inspection, digital twin platforms, and Network-as-a-Service models—that demonstrate potential efficiency gains of 15–20%. Finally, it identifies key challenges and emphasizes the importance of cross-sector collaboration in supporting broader adoption.
