This case study is one of the five prepared for the 2016 APEC Economic Policy Report, which had a theme on structural reform and services. The study examines the financial services sector reform in Japan, specifically Koizumi’s 2006 reforms. Besides drawing out lessons applicable to APEC from these reforms, it also provides policy recommendations such as introducing clearer metrics with regard to market-opening reforms going forward.
