The report presents the outcomes of the APEC project SMEWG 203 2024A, aimed at increasing the visibility and strengthening the development of family-owned MSMEs across the Asia-Pacific region. It consolidates findings from a regional survey, a two-day workshop held in Mexico City, and expert contributions, providing a comprehensive overview of the current landscape of family businesses.

The publication highlights their economic relevance—representing up to 65–80% of businesses in many economies—while identifying key challenges such as lack of standardized definitions, limited access to finance, governance gaps, and digitalization barriers.

It also underscores their strengths, including resilience, community embeddedness, and long-term orientation, and offers actionable policy recommendations to improve statistical visibility, promote digital transformation, strengthen governance, and enhance inclusive growth through coordinated regional efforts.
