APEC Photo Contest 2013 winners announced

APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting Bali, Indonesia | 02 October 2013

The winners of the APEC Photo Contest 2013 were announced on Wednesday at the Concluding Senior Officials’ Meeting in Bali.

  • First Place: “Electric Circuitry” by Jonathan Shun Jie Chiang from Singapore (Theme: Sustaining Momentum to Free and Open Trade)
  • Second place: “Iron Men” by McLloyd T. Jumpay from the Philippines (Theme: Regional Connectivity)
  • Third place: “Catching Sunlight” by Tran Van Tuy from Viet Nam (Theme: Sustainable Growth with Equity)
  • Popular Choice Award: “Iron Men” by McLloyd T. Jumpay from the Philippines.

Through the annual APEC Photo Contest, APEC invites photographers to portray how trade is reflected in the lives of people in the region. This year’s contest focused on the APEC 2013 priorities of attaining the Bogor goals of free and open trade, sustainable growth with equity and regional connectivity.

A blue-ribbon panel of judges selected the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners based on relevance, interpretation and composition of their photos. The Popular Choice Award was selected by the public through the APEC Facebook Photo Contest App. The winning photo “Iron Men” received 1576 Likes.

“With some 600 photos submitted from all over the APEC region, all three images uniquely reflect our theme for this year,” said Ambassador Yuri Thamrin, Chair of the APEC 2013 Senior Officials’ Meeting and one of the judges. “We appreciate the photographers’ interpretation of our work at APEC in a way that is both immediately accessible and artistic.”

First place winner, Jonathan Shun Jie Chiang explained his interpretation, “My photo, ‘Electric Circuitry’ depicts Singapore’s busy port scene. This multi-exposure shot combines many long exposures to achieve the numerous light trails along the road that circles the port.”

“As Singapore is small, trade is very important. The light trails in the shot are more than just light trails, they represent the lifeblood of Singapore,” added Mr. Chiang, who is an undergraduate electrical engineering student.

Second place winner, McLloyd T. Jumpay, from the Philippines also artistically interpreted the APEC 2013 themes.

“The photo is about two construction workers preparing to lift a steel I-beam so they can connect it to the main structure of the project they are working on. I felt it was very appropriate for the Improving Connectivity theme,” Mr Jumpay said, who also won the Popular Choice Award.

The use of dominant orange color emphasizes the energetic feeling of the workers, added Mr. Jumpay, who is a civil engineer by profession. He took up photography as a hobby and plans to donate part of his prize money to his camera club’s outreach programs.

Dr Alan Bollard, Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat and also a judge, concluded, “We have many talented photographers in our region, as evidenced by the many beautifully composed photos we received this year. It wasn’t easy to pick just three.”

“We appreciate all the photographers who participated in this year’s contest and we look forward to your continued work to capture what’s at the heart of APEC’s work.”

The panel of judges also included award-winning professional photographers Eric Baradat, Editor-in-Chief of Agence France-Presse Photo; Arbain Rambey, Photo Editor of Kompas Daily in Indonesia; and photographer Palani Mohan whose work has been featured in publications such as National Geographic and Time magazine.

The first prize winner will receive S$2,000, while second and third prize winners will receive S$1,500 and S$1,000 respectively. These photos will be showcased during the 2013 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Bali in October as well as in key APEC publications.
