APEC ensures that goods, services, investment and people move easily across borders. Members facilitate this trade through faster customs procedures at borders; more favorable business climates behind the border; and aligning regulations and standards across the region.

APEC has helped drive economic growth and cooperation across the Asia-Pacific by reducing trade barriers, improving the ease of doing business and strengthening connectivity among economies. These efforts have contributed to rising incomes, expanded trade and greater opportunities for businesses and communities across the region.

The publication summarizes the outcomes of the APEC AI Standards Conference, “Building a Sustainable AI Ecosystem Tomorrow,” held on 2–3 August 2025 in Incheon, Republic of Korea.
The project brought together policymakers, industry representatives, standards experts, and researchers to exchange experiences on international AI standards and their practical application. It presents findings from a pre-event survey on AI standardization awareness and readiness across participating APEC economies, as well as key discussions on AI governance, conformity assessment, ISO/IEC 42001, trustworthiness, data quality, and sustainable AI practices.
The report also highlights practical implementation challenges, particularly for SMEs and economies at earlier stages of standards adoption. Participant feedback showed strong satisfaction and improved understanding of AI standards. The publication identifies continued capacity building, practical guidance, knowledge sharing, and cross-economy cooperation as potential areas for further APEC engagement.
