Description
APEC Carbon-Free Energy (CFE) Workshop was held in Busan, Korea, in September 2024, highlighting the critical role diverse clean energy technologies play in achieving decarbonization targets. Despite substantial global investments—nearly USD 2 trillion in 2023 alone—greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, indicating renewable energy alone is insufficient. The report emphasizes that integrating various CFE technologies such as hydrogen, nuclear energy, carbon capture and storage, and advanced storage systems is crucial. It addresses the necessity of robust policies, grid modernization, international standardization, and active private sector engagement to overcome existing financial, infrastructure, and regulatory challenges. Moreover, the report identifies the growing importance and potential of disruptive technologies like small modular reactors and hydrogen, underlining the need for continuous innovation, international cooperation, and policy support to ensure affordability, safety, and public acceptance.
