APEC ensures that goods, services, investment and people move easily across borders. Members facilitate this trade through faster customs procedures at borders; more favorable business climates behind the border; and aligning regulations and standards across the region.

The APEC report on preventing food loss and waste (FLW) policy implementation highlights the progress, challenges, and best practices among member economies.
The report evaluates advancements in four dimensions: strategy and planning, leadership and governance, policy instruments and measurement, based on a survey conducted in APEC economies and a workshop held in Trujillo – Peru. The workshop fostered knowledge exchange, collaboration, and the presentation of best practices, policy tools and successful case studies.
The findings reveal significant progress in leadership, strategic planning, and the establishment of multi-stakeholder platforms, such as food banks and donation systems, which have mobilized resources and commitments. However, opportunities remain to develop comprehensive measurement systems and design effective policy instruments. Successful practices, like baseline FLW measurements implemented by developed economies, are key references for data-driven policymaking.
The report recommends promoting knowledge transfer from developed to developing economies and systematizing successful experiences to support regional efforts to achieve sustainable food systems and prevent and reduce FLW across the APEC region.
