The Digital Future is Here

The digital age is now a reality in both developed and developing economies. The rapid evolution of the Internet and the digital economy impacts all areas of APEC’s work:

  • Build infrastructure to get everyone online access.
  • Develop regulation and trade rules to for the new economy.
  • Make sure new technology helps create new jobs and contributes to society.
  • Chile aims to implement a plan of action that offers short-term gains and sets the foundation for more challenging long-term progress

Getting Everyone Access

APEC’s work will help improve the quality and coverage of telecommunications infrastructure across the region. This will both promote more inclusive economic and social participation within each economy, and will improve regional connectivity through telecommunications.

Democratizing Participation

APEC has focused in recent years on bridging the digital divide, so more people can take advantage of the internet and digital trade.

This involves not only getting people online access, but also designing education, training and knowledge strategies to make sure that the opportunities afforded by new technologies are available to everyone. Chile will take this work and use the digital economy to drive the democratization of participation.

Setting the Rules

Policymakers in APEC will develop efficient, coherent and comprehensive regulatory frameworks for digital related policies behind the border, as well as rules for e-commerce and digital trade between APEC economies.

Scholars, companies, the technical community and all digital development stakeholders will work together on all these initiatives in order to incorporate this vision into the forum’s work.

Mapping the Digital Terrain

For economies to develop policies about the internet and the digital economy, they need sound and comparable data. With the APEC forum they can collectively design and implement methodologies that help policymakers understand the gaps and sectors where data is most needed. To implement this idea, Chile will drive efforts to:

  • Develop a common measurement methodology about the internet and the digital economy
  • Develop an annual report on digital policies
