Tourism Ministers Release Hoi An Declaration
Hoi An, Viet Nam, October 17, 2006
At the conclusion of their meeting today, APEC Tourism Ministers adopted the "Hoi An Declaration on Tourism" to promote sustainable tourism and investment in the region. APEC Member Economies agreed on a range of expanded measures to work together in the spirit of cooperation to ensure a vibrant tourism industry.

Business Executives Call for APEC Leaders to Lead WTO Negotiations

Senior Asia-Pacific business executives have called on APEC Member Economies to play a strong leadership role in restarting foundering World Trade Organization Doha Development Agenda trade talks. In their 2006 report to Leaders, the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) identified a series of priority topics which are vital to business interests and economic prosperity. ABAC Members will discuss these issues and call for action when they meet with APEC Leaders in Ha Noi, Viet Nam, in November.

Ha Noi Declaration to Strengthen SME Competitiveness Released by Ministers

APEC Small and Medium Enterprises Ministers have released the "Hanoi Declaration on Strengthening SME Competitiveness for Trade and Investment" to assist small businesses deal with the challenges posed by globalization. The Hanoi Declaration is a landmark document for APEC's SME work that identifies measures of importance for the ongoing health of small business in the region. These include domestic reforms in areas such as the reduction of red tape and bureaucracy, and the importance of business incubation, innovation and entrepreneurship support from regional governments.

New APEC Economic Committee Chair Appointed

Professor Bob Buckle from New Zealand has been selected as the new Chair of the APEC Economic Committee starting in 2007. An award wining economist and Principal Advisor at the New Zealand Treasury, Professor Buckle said ensuring that APEC members engage in the regional economy will be one of the priorities of his work as Chair. "As a policy advisor at the New Zealand Treasury, it is clear to me that no economy can afford to set domestic policy in a vacuum," Professor Buckle said after being named as Chair.
