High-Level Meeting on Sustainable Development, 20-21 July, Santiago, Chile
Sustainable Development is an overall goal that governments, private sector and civil society are striving for. The potential impact that an integrated framework can have in APEC, as well as the synergies that can be achieved with international stakeholders such as United Nations and its work on Sustainable Development, are positive and encouraging enough to envision more economic value added, poverty reduction and inequality leverage, as well as the protection and/or regeneration of environmental resources. The High Level Meeting on Sustainable Development aims to give an APEC-oriented follow-up to issues on the agenda for the current biannual cycle of the Commission for Sustainable Development, which meets at UN Headquarters from 1-12 May 2006. The agenda will include a historical analysis of APEC activities in sustainable development and focus on industrial development and energy for sustainable development.

Human Resources Development Ministerial Meeting, October 16-18 (tentative), Bangkok, Thailand
Based on concerns about whether globalization is producing a wide socioeconomic gap between skilled workers and those who are not able to have a better access to education and training, concepts like job stability are constantly threatened. For example, many corporations are finding ways to reduce benefits and several governments are keen for deregulation policies and less intervention while others are considering cutting pensions for the retired. These actions, contrary in principle with the workers' basic rights are being encouraged for the sake of competitiveness. Therefore, there is a need to find a balance between the needed competitiveness and the social protection required for the workers' welfare and the stability of our society.

Facing present challenges and the ever-changing conditions in the world market (goods, services and capitals) Ministers of Labor from APEC member economies will discuss how to create new social issues that affect human resources development under the proposed theme, "Globalization and HRD Policy: The Way Forward." The meeting will cover the positive and negative consequences derived from international trade given an environment characterized by faster and more complex technology, new systems of transportation and the speed of today?s communications.
