APEC Asia Biomass Forum, Tokyo, 19-20 January 2006
Organized by Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan APEC Asia the Biomass Forum will discuss ways to develop sustainable rural areas and agriculture through effective use of biomass resources.

The main theme of the Forum will be to discuss cases from specific rural areas in Asia where biomass is generated and efficiently and stably utilized. Both the problems involved in the generation and utilization of biomass and future tasks will be presented, with the emphasis on the development of sustainable agriculture and rural areas.

First ABAC Meeting, Singapore, 22-25 January 2006
Looming economic issues of concern to regional business, including the WTO, regional financial systems, energy markets, and capacity building, will be among the issues discussed at the first APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) meeting of 2006. Under the leadership of the new Vietnamese Chair Mr. Hoang Van Dung, members will discuss how to advance this year's work program, and prioritize business' top concerns to raise with APEC Leaders this year. The meeting will also feature a special seminar on Avian Influenza, to consider actions to help mitigate a possible pandemic, and a seminar with local Singapore businesses examining business opportunities in Singapore.

APEC SOM I Meeting and Related Meetings, Ha Noi, Viet Nam, 20 February - 02 March 2006
At their first meeting for 2006, Senior Officials will agree on the main tasks for the year, based on a thorough discussion of the 2005 APEC Economic Leaders' Declaration, Tasking Statement and the 2006 themes and priorities. Accordingly, Senior Officials will guide the activities of APEC's Committees, Working Groups and Task Forces to realize the tasks and priorities of APEC in 2006. Senior Officials will also develop recommendations for APEC Ministers and APEC Economic Leaders in order to further the goals of APEC process. Senior Officials' Meetings are held four times a year with the chair from the host economy.

APEC Workshop on Best Practices in Trade Policy for RTAs/FTA, Ha Noi, Viet Nam, 27 February - 01 March 2006
The workshop was proposed in response to the growing number of FTAs/RTAs in the Asia-Pacific region and the need to strengthen the capacity of developing member economies to participate effectively in negotiating such agreements. The principal purposes of the Workshop are (i) to identify possible elements to be taken into account in trade policy for RTAs/FTAs, using the APEC Best Practices for FTAs/RTAs as a reference with respect to FTAs/RTAs currently being negotiated and with respect to those that may be negotiated in the future, on a voluntary basis (ii) to exchange views with experts from APEC members on the best-practice trade policy in RTA/FTAs and model measures for various chapters for RTAs/FTAs and (iii) to assist developing APEC member economies consolidate a set of concrete measures to maximize the benefits of comprehensive trade liberalization and handle the potential adverse impact of RTA/FTAs to their economies.

APEC Symposium on Information Privacy Protection in E-Government and E-Commerce, Ha Noi, Viet Nam, 20-22 February, 2006
Hosted by the Institute of Information Technology and the Ministry of Trade of Vietnam, the symposium responds to the recognition by APEC Minister of the importance of effective privacy protection, to avoid barriers to information flows and promote continued trade and economic growth in the APEC region. The symposium aims to build on the endorsement by APEC Ministers in November 2005 of the Privacy Framework and to assist economies implement the APEC Privacy Framework and the International Implementation Guidance Section of the Framework.
