Conference on Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Preparedness for Avian Influenza, May 3, Hong Kong, China
Business delivers a range of critical services and products, such as power and gas, food, water, telecommunications, transportation, security, banking and healthcare, and business must ensure that these critical services continue, even in the event of a crisis. The APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), in cooperation with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), is organizing the conference Business Continuity Planning and Disaster Preparedness for Avian Influenza, to be held 3 May 2006 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This one-day conference will feature speakers from the World Health Organization, Asian Development Bank, FedEx, Deutsche Bank AG, and American International Group, and is expected to draw 500 business participants.

The conference aim is to "train trainers", so that participants will further disseminate the lessons and materials within their firms and through business associations. The conference fee is USD 100, and participants will be given a checklist of contingency plan best practices to assist in developing business continuity plans. For more information, please contact Patricia Pascual (ABAC) at patriciapascual@pfgc.ph or Vanice Ty Chan (HKTDC) at vanice.ty.chan@tdc.org.hk.

APEC Symposium on Enabling Private Sector Development, May 9-10, Montreal, Canada
This workshop will focus on ways to improve the business environment in the region, with a particular focus on small, medium and micro-enterprises. The symposium will take place on the margins of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) meeting, 9-10 May 2006, in Montreal, Canada. Organizers hope to help APEC focus on practical measures of interest to business in areas like trade facilitation, transparency and anti-corruption, and WTO capacity building, and to encourage APEC members to improve their performance with respect to the World Bank's "ease of doing business" indicators. Such benchmarks, covering key processes like establishing a business, registering property, and collecting a debt, could help APEC members gauge their relative performance and progress, even against their own self-selected policy targets. The symposium will be in coordination with the World Bank and will present current research in the area of "ease of doing business", as well as hearing from APEC members about their own analysis practices.
