The Education Network (EDNET) fosters strong and vibrant learning systems across APEC member economies, promotes education for all, and strengthens the role of education in promoting social, individual, economic and sustainable development.
In August 1992 Education Ministers from 14 member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) met in Washington, D.C.. They agreed to form an APEC Education Forum within APEC's Human Resources Development Working Group and to coordinate joint activities in the field of education. Representatives of ministries of education and other educational organizations from member economies participate in the Education Forum.
Members of the Human Resources Development Working Group approved a restructuring plan,in January 2000. As a result of that restructuring the Education Forum was changed to the Education Network (EDNET).
And in April 2000, 20 Ministers of Education met in Singapore for the 2nd APEC Education Ministerial Meeting.
In April 2004, 19 APEC Education Ministers met in Santiago, Chile, under the policy theme of "Skills for the Coming Challenges," to foster linkages and strengthen collaborative initiatives in the field of education. The ministers issued a joint statement defining four priority areas for future network activities:
1. Mathematics and Science Instruction -- Stimulating Learning in Math and Science Facility with mathematics and science is key to success in a global economy driven by technological development and the use of information and data.
2. Using Information Technology to Support Teaching and Learning Access to and use of information and communication technologies (ICT) are of primary concern for educators in all APEC economies. 3. Learning Each Other's Languages The ability to communicate across language barriers is essential to international trade and to building mutual understanding among interconnected global economies.
4. Governance and Systemic Reform -- Centralization and Decentralization Many APEC members are reforming education governance systems to meet the challenges they face in teaching the skills students require for the 21st Century.
Recent Activities
EDNET is undertaking a pre-Ministerial policy and research Symposium in January 2008 in China entitled "Education to Achieve 21st Century Competencies and Skills for All: Respecting the Past to Move Toward the Future." The aim is to prepare content and an agenda for the 4th APEC Education Ministerial Meeting (AEMM) which is to be held in Lima in the summer of 2008. Participants for the Symposium will be researchers, government officials, and members from the private sector concerned with the students, workers, and managers of the 21st Century.
